Motorola continues to make up for its dismal Rokr E1 with its new Rokr E8. Announced at the ultra-posh Wynn Hotel during a late-night press conference (we're not sure why Moto had to wait until 9 p.m. on a Sunday to do this), the ROKR E8 is one of two handsets Moto is announcing at CES 2008. And it won CNET's Best of CES in the cell phones and smartphones.
Music, of course, is a central theme here but the ROKR E8's real news lies with its unique "ModeShift" technology. Instead of traditional keypad and navigation array, the Rokr features a smooth "glasslike" surface with touch-pad controls that digitally "morph" depending on how the handset is used. As you shift from phone to music to imaging modes, the backlight on the control changes to illuminate only the relevant buttons for your current function. The E8 also features Motorola's first Haptics keypad with vibrating feedback and a "FastScroll" navigation wheel that makes it pretty seamless to navigate through long playlists. It's not a complete circle but it's pretty user-friendly.
Loading songs on the E8 is also supposed to be fast and easy via a USB connection to a PC. Moto said that over the next year it would introduce more music phones like the E8 that would be better than standalone music players. That's a bold prediction, we can't wait to test it out. We have to say, however, that Moto seems to have succeeded at integrating the ergonomics of an MP3 player and a cell phone into one device.
Other features on the candy bar device include a Linux/Java OS, support for Windows Media Player 11, a large (2-inch) 262,000-color display, 2GB internal memory, stereo Bluetooth, USB 2.0, Moto's CrystalTalk technology (like we saw on the Razr2 series), an external memory card slot, a 2-megapixel camera, a digital-music player, and a full HTML browser. The quad-band world phone supports GPRS and EDGE networks, and it offers a "talking phone" to read your text messages while dialing a number or receiving a call. We haven't had the chance to test that particular feature yet, but it looks fun. |

This phone rocks. It is a little hesitant to morph into the different modes but nothing that is too bothersome. The camera takes awesome pics too. Texting is very easy to get used to and the great thing about it is if youre in the middle of a text and you get a message you can read that one, and when youre done, hit back and your message is right there to finish.

I have been using this phone since after CES in 08. It is functional and practical. I like the candy bar style phones but, I also like music and the multi-media functionality of it. I am impressed because I am hard on phones with my work and this one is built solid! The morphing keypad is pretty kewl too. I like that you can add a 8 gig memory card as well, even though it was only advertised for up to 2 gig. With moto phone tools you can add and remove media with ease, edit music etc. Bottom line, for the money you can't beat it overall.

i love this fone...the keys do take some getting use to bt it's a good phone....very loud speakers which is an excellent feature for me..ill shop from mco again for sure...

I highly recommend this product, it is a very nice high performance yet cheap and modest device. For music lover like myself this product is just perfect. I would say that the processing speed could be better, but besides that everything is just fine.

Good phone, music quality is excellent especially with earphone. I bought a better pair of earphone, the quality is even more astounding! I rated it 4/5 because E8 is not complete without certain features but doesn't mean it's not a good phone. I bought it knowing what it has & what's missing in it as I don't really mind features like 3G or Wifi. I use the FastScroll wheel a lot, in fact I like it together with the morphing keypad and haptics. Of course 3G, Wifi and other stuff can be added in, the question is are you willing to pay for it?

Great phone does a lot for the price. The scroll wheel is annoying at times cause it scrolls on its own sometimes but other than that it works good and Im very satisfied with my phone its what I wanted.
